Windley
Key Fossil Reef
State Geological Site
Location: Mile Marker 84.5 Bayside
The Windley Key Fossil Reef State
Geologic Site is one of only two State geologic sites in
Florida. It was purchased in 1985 through
Florida's Conservation and Recreation Land (CARL)
Program.
Visitors to the site can see the
remains of early 20th century quarries cut through the
125,000 year old fossil reef that helped build the
overseas railroad. There are also
several walking
trails through the native Hiking trails with over 40 kinds of trees,
native fruits and berries that support several
endangered species. A visitor center is onsite with displays showing
the history
& geology of the area.
